Walk through Skopje’s famous Old Bazaar and try to resist the smell of sizzling kevapi drifting from charcoal grills. The majestic muezzin’s call to prayer resonates above the rooftops, carried from the minarets of Mustafa Pasha, Sultan Murat, Arasta and Isa Bey Mosques throughout the Old Bazaar. Worn cobblestone streets, lined with stone façades and wooden shutters, lead you past the historic caravanserais of Kurshumli, Kapan and Suli An, once bustling with merchants and travellers. Between them, the open doors of traditional patisseries tempt you with sweet walnut and pistachio baklava, complemented by a small cup of strong Turkish coffee. Cross the Stone Bridge, and the atmosphere changes: the winding streets of the Old Bazaar give way to broad squares, monumental buildings and the bustle of modern city life. As the Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish, Serbian and Bosnian languages mingle in the air, feel the soul of this vibrant city, shaped by the many communities that continue to define its ever-evolving character.

Kokino — An Ancient Wonder Above the Ordinary
Ancient rock terraces at Kokino
Perched among the rocky heights of northeastern Macedonia, Kokino invites you to step into a landscape shaped by time and ancient human ingenuity. This remarkable 1800 BC megalithic site, known for its astronomical significance, offers a striking encounter with massive stone formations and far-reaching views across the surrounding mountains. As the horizon opens before you, imagine the people who once observed the celestial movements of the Sun, followed the star Aldebaran and marked the changing of the seasons from this very place. At Kokino, beneath the same vast sky, the distance between the ancient world and our own seems suddenly smaller.
5
Osogovo Monastery — The Sacred Whisper of the Mountains
Osogovo Monastery
Among the forested slopes of the Osogovo Mountains stands this 12th-century monastery of St. Joachim of Osogovo, a hermit who sought God through prayer, solitude and a life of devotion. For centuries, the monastery has welcomed generations of believers into its quiet embrace. Its ancient stone walls, sacred icons and peaceful courtyards speak of a spirituality that cannot be explained by words. It can only be felt — in a candle’s gentle flame, a whispered prayer or a moment of stillness. You may arrive with a thousand thoughts on your mind and leave with just one: perhaps the world could use a little more silence.
